THE WAR MEMORIAL

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them."

The War Memorial

Kingsteignton's war memorial was unveiled on 24th May1921 (Empire Day). It was designed in the form of a Maltese Cross by Canon Mills of Truro and carved from Dartmoor granite. Fifty six names of those who had fallen in the conflict were originally inscribed on the slate memorial tablet, two more names being added at a later date to make a total of fifty eight. Many people are often confused why Kingsteignton's memorial bears the dates 1914-1919 when the armistice was signed in 1918. The reason for this is that many communities lost servicemen in the period between November 1918 and the signing of the peace treaty in June 1919 through the effects of injury or the ill fated Archangel Expedition. Where this was the case the later date was used. The carved names were originally illuminated with white paint but this was removed in 1928. Now the lettering is painted black

Two more slate panels were added to the sides of the memorial to remember those lost in World War 2.

Each year civic dignitaries and various groups lay wreaths at the memorial in remembrance of those listed on the inscribed panels.

It is hoped that this page will give an insight into the lives and personalities of those young men recorded on those panels and left Kingsteignton never to return, having made the supreme sacrifice.
